Why do lots of programs ask to install either the Google or the Yahoo toolbar when installing?

Lots of programs when you are installing them, have an extra option for installing either the Google or the Yahoo toolbar. For example, DivX Player, CCleaner… and tons of other programs. Why? Why do the program authors decide to go out of their way to add such an option?
